GEOGRIDS

    What are Geogrids?

They are geosynthetic materials composed of a single or multiple layers, usually made by extrusion and stretching of high-density polyethylene or polypropylene, or by weaving and coating high-tenacity polyester threads. The resulting grid structure has large openings that enhance interaction with soil or aggregate.

The high tensile strength and stiffness of geogrids make them especially effective as soil and aggregate reinforcement.

    Types of Geogrids

    Extruded Uniaxial Geogrids

Manufactured from High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE), these are those that are pre-stressed in one direction and are typically used vertically in geotechnical engineering projects such as reinforced soil and retaining walls.

    Physical Characteristic:

    Longitudinal rectangular openings

    Extruded Biaxial Geogrids

Manufactured from Polypropylene (PP), these are those that are pre-stressed in two directions and are typically used horizontally in applications where the direction of primary stress is uncertain.

    Physical Characteristic:

    Square openings

    Functions of Geogrids

    geogrid-function-reinforcement

    Reinforcement

Geogrids are used to reinforce weak or unstable soils, improving their strength and load-bearing capacity. They are placed at the base of structures to prevent deformations and failures due to pressure or load.

    Drainage

In some cases, geogrids also help improve drainage, as they can allow water to pass through without compromising the integrity of the soil or the structure.

    Functions of Geogrids

    • Reinforcement of paved and unpaved roads.
    • Reinforcement of surcharge fills or temporary fills such as construction platforms.
    • To reinforce embankment and earth dam fills.
    • To repair slope failures and landslides.
    • As reinforcement for foundations over soft soils.
    • To stabilize cover soils over geomembranes.
    • To increase the load-bearing capacity of fills.
